Brett Ashy, President/Principle of The Ashy Agency, shares his top must-see sessions at PromaxBDA: The Conference 2010. | Marketing at the Edge of Madness Peter Ligouri is one of our sharpest minds in broadcast today, and I’m quite interested to hear what he has to say. I’ve been watching his stellar career for sometime now, and if someone has the long streak of success that he does, then Iwant to know what he’s thinking. Nickelodeon: One Brand I’m very interested in how Nickelodeon chose to unify all their brands, while still marketing directly to various demographics. I love case studies of rebrands (more on that later), however, this one is a case study on the unification of several brands while at the same time letting each brand do a different job. I think it’s going to be fascinating. Owning Your Brand: A Look Inside the Syfy Rebrand I will be moderating this discussion on the rebrand of the Syfy Network. This one will fascinate as to the reasons Syfy chose to fully recreate themselves at a time when they were extremely successful, the extreme negative reception the rebrand got (lots of crazy stories regarding that) and an almost up to the second report on the effect the rebrand has had on the network overall.

Jakob Trollbäck, Owner and Creative Director, Trollbäck + Company, shares his top six must-see sessions at PromaxBDA: The Conference 2010. | This turned out to be a hard list to make. It will be a good year. Here is my top 6: Nickelodeon: One Brand Kicking it off with the eminent Matt and Anne, who deftly collected all little offspring (and quite a few orphans too) and made the family whole. I'm honored to be invited to the Leaders in Design panel, so that's on my schedule, but my Scandinavian upbringing prohibits me from promoting the event. As if I just didn't. This unfortunately means I will miss the Challenging Mediocrity session. We always should. Actually, should we even bother to criticize things that doesn't aspire to excellence? My Generation: Forecasting the Changing Mood of Your Audience I would definitely not have had this on my list before I got myself two young audiences right at home. Or maybe before we did our Nick rebrand. It suddenly feels very relevant, perhaps even urgent! Inventions in the New Age of Engagement The best inspiration always seems to come from outside. I'm always happy to see how a new point of view totally re-frames the challenge and lead to unexpected solutions. Besides, Patrick is running a kick-ass magazine, so I vote for him. Creative Anarchy: Design Shops You Won’t Be Able to Afford Next Year Another opportunity to see something new I hope. Meaning ideas. Being new or unknown is in itself not the same as being great, but there is always a certain hopefulness and loads of potential energy that can be very contagious. And why else would you be in creative field if it wasn't for the thrill in finding new directions? Lee Hunt Presents: New Best Practices But wait, that would mean missing Lee's session... This will be a hard one... Design and Happiness If you don't already know Stefan, now is the time. And If you already know him, you don't need anyone to tell you to go. Owning Your Brand: A Look Inside the Syfy Rebrand I've been involved in enough controversy about re-imagined brands to not appreciate (and love) the process. Courage always pays off. Or as Goethe said: "Boldness has genius, power and magic in it." As usual, I'll try to catch State of Our Art and obviously the awards shows etc. Being a lover of type, I'll also try to go see Justine's new movie Typeface.

Building a Global Brand: National Geographic’s Curious Success Nat Geo has done an amazing job with their on-air work in the past few years. Great strategy and great creative blended to really stamp a strong brand on their channel. I’m excited to learn about how they’ve done it.
Design and Happiness One of the great things the PromaxBDA conference offers are opportunities like this, to learn from and to be inspired by legendary designers like Stefan Sagmeister. Anyone who has a role in contributing creative to the work their network produces would be wise to put the Design and Happiness session at the top of their “must-see” list. Leaders in Design: An Inspiration Conversation Four amazing creative shops represented in one session together. If you were lucky enough to get any of these four to work on spots for your channel, you can be sure you’d come out looking like a genius. I’m anxious to hear what they look for in a client and the gigs they take for virtually no money (and how can I convince them to work with us for a small budget?)
Lee Hunt Presents: New Best Practices Lee is really one of the smartest and most insightful people I’ve ever heard talk about our business. He is that rare combination of an incredibly strategic mind mixed with an undeniably artistic heart. His breadth of knowledge is so broad, and his experience so vast, that I leap at any chance to hear him talk about our business.
Marketing at the Edge of Madness If you work in any facet of the entertainment industry and have a chance to hear from someone as formidable as Peter Liqouri, you do it. In a heartbeat. I had the good fortune to work for Peter several years ago and know firsthand how razor-sharp smart he is. And I’m pretty sure he’s going to rule the world one day. So probably best to go see him speak.

Maryam Banikarim, PromaxBDA board member and SVP, Integrated Sales Marketing for NBC Universal, shares her top must-see sessions at PromaxBDA: The Conference 2010. | My “picks” fell into four bucket lists: The best titles that drew me (nice & simple marketing)! Creative Anarchy: Design Shops You Won’t Be Able to Afford Next Year Always looking for great partners who make you better/smarter. Marketing at the Edge of Madness Peter Liguori and his title… need I say more? Inspiration New Market. New Mindsets. Sure to leave this session thinking about something “tired” in a “fresh” way. The Zero-Dollar Media Plan Most innovative ideas can often surface when one has no “choice” (e.g. money). Learning about consumers Trendwatch: The Changing Face of the American Audience & Welcome to América: A Gringo Media Marketer’s 101 - Ten Years Later Multi-cultural audiences ARE a big part of everyone’s consumer base. If you haven’t discovered them yet, here’s your chance right before the Census results come out and before your boss asks you why you weren’t on what is such an obviously reality! “My Generation:” Forecasting the CHANGING Mood of Your Audience I confess to loving consumers and this session is all about insights that help you better understand them. A Standby

There is so much going on in entertainment technology globally, and I'm looking forward to this hour-long overview! Lee Hunt Presents: New Best Practices This is the session that I have heard is a "don't miss" from fellow PromaxBDA members, and I have yet to see this annual crowd favorite! I won't miss it! Trendwatch: The Changing Face of the American Audience Trends are ever-changing, and we as marketers need to keep on them. I'm always looking to gain information on audiences and the influences they have on what we do and think this session is one not to miss! Marketing at the Edge of Madness Peter Liguori is an icon in the industry, and I'm thrilled that PromaxBDA is able to provide me access to someone so incredibly creative and innovative. I think the title of the panel is intriguing and incredibly relatable as we witness an explosion of so many new media outlets that are both fueling media fragmentation and convergence at the same time.
| | | Lee Hunt's Must-See “Playlist” for PromaxBDA: The Conference 2010! Lee Hunt, President and Founder of Lee Hunt LLC, shared his can’t-miss sessions coming up at PromaxBDA: The Conference 2010. | 1. Reality Check Session: The Revenue-Centric Marketing Team: How to Make Integrated Sales Work for You. Like it or not, this is where we are all headed. Understanding and mastering integrated sales is critical to getting ahead in the promo world. And these panelists are the best of the bunch. (But they could use a better title - see category 4.) 2. Inspiration Session: Lots of choices for this category, but I'm going with Marketing at the Edge of Madness. Peter Liguori is one of the smartest and most articulate executives I've ever met. I know that whatever he has to say will be provocative, inspiring and entertaining. 3. What's Next Session: New Markets. New Mindsets. Just mention "media anthropology" and I'm there. Seriously, Rishad Tobaccowala has a great rep as a thinker and a speaker. Trying to get a handle on where our business is going is the only way we can stay relevant (and employed). 4. Back to the Basics Session: Write with 3 Balls . Linda Button and Marilyn Kass are great writers and even better teachers. Their sessions always get high marks, and honestly good writing in our business is hard to come by. 5. Fun Session: Best of Cable. Wall-to-wall spots from scores of channels. For me, always one of the best hours of the conference. 6. Networking Session: CMO Summit. Your next boss or client is probably sitting on the stage just waiting for you to corner them after the session. Don't blow it.
| | | Rafael Sandor's Must-See “Playlist” for PromaxBDA: The Conference 2010! Rafael Sandor, PromaxBDA board member and EVP, Creative and Marketing at National Geographic Channels Intl. & Fox Intl. Channels EMEA, shared his can’t-miss sessions coming up at PromaxBDA: The Conference 2010. | Honestly, it is quite hard to choose my top five list for this year’s PromaxBDA, as there are so many great sessions and speakers in the lineup. And then, all those Playboy bunnies hopping around will likely be a distraction. Let me start with an easy one: State of Our Art has become a must-see, always inspiring, innovative and fun, it is the easiest way to keep ourselves updated with what’s going on in the industry and our ideas fresh. I am also looking forward to Inventions in the New Age of Engagement. Technology is changing the way people entertain themselves and consume media. If you want to understand how to connect with your viewers in a constantly evolving scenario, just be there. Same goes for Everything You Need to Know about 3D Television but Were Afraid to Ask and PromaxBDA Research & Insights Committee Presents: The Top 5 Media Insights You Need to Know – understand where things are going to make strategy today. Then the great speakers: Marketing at the Edge of Madness. Peter Liguori is a key leader in our industry, who helped shape our profession and still does. Just listening to his views and ideas can’t be anything other than motivating. Finallly, Design & Happiness. Stefan Sagmeister seems to be a never-ending source of creativity. His website thingsihavelearnedinmylife.com, mixes art, design and communication to the daily life. Unique, inspired, simple. You shouldn’t miss this session. And before i finish, let me invite you to our Building a Global Brand: National Geographic’s Curious Success. You will be able to witness the process of making a truly global brand campaign, involving different regional and cultural points of views and needs.
| | | Will Travis's Must-See “Playlist” for PromaxBDA: The Conference 2010! Will Travis, PromaxBDA board member and CEO of Dentsu America, shared his top six can’t-miss sessions coming up at PromaxBDA: The Conference 2010. | Design & Happiness To start, the Stefan Sagmeister design keynote. This 6’5’’ Austrian designer broke the mold for personal design expression, when he had his intern X-Acto knife his whole body with typographic messaging for an AIGA poster. is a great start! He’s a super captivating global creative thinker, a unique inspiration to anyone that works in or around the creative field and in person, a top bloke. Brilliant! And then, if your brain hasn’t already started smoldering with Stefan, it certainly will after an hour with Rishad Tobaccowala. This man will inspire your futurist passions like no other. A real mentor in the space where communications, technology and creativity collide, Rishad’s session is a must insight, into today’s new media landscape. Furthermore, his credentials prove he’s a leader not to be missed. And while you’re catching up to speed with Rishad, I’d suggest you continue with the “Inventions in the New Age of Engagement” session. Yes, we all engage in broad social media platforms and embrace the Four Squares and iButterfly’s of our communities – but to clearly understand how we can fully employ these platforms may open a few areas of grey in our confidence and the resulting engagement. So may I suggest you top it up with attend this session led by Patrick at Creative Review and Discovery UK’s Federico Gaggio. After spending several days walking the floors at CES in Las Vegas this year, the fourth session, discussing all the ins and outs of the new 3D television wave, is a must see, even if it’s to come out as skeptical as many afterwards. With 90% of the television manufacturers investing the majority of their marketing dollars in 3D at this year’s Consumer Electronic Show, it has to be our duty, as the content creators, producers and navigators to understand where this is all going. Speaking of 3D, who doesn’t want to hear how the world of Hugh Hefner and his Playboy brand are being affected by this technology and many other things over at the Playboy brand. Love him or hate the guy, to be so successful for 57 years makes Hugh one of the most successful brand champions in history. So, to not invest the time to understand how he and Playboy have ridden so many waves (and girlfriends) deprives oneself from learning. And who more entertaining and probing than the legendary Larry King to host the interview! And finally, a tough, tough choice, but my last selection has to be (in addition to the Design Awards Show, as you have to see what the best of the best in our industry are doing : ) the “Marketing at the Edge of Madness” with Peter Liguori. I always love listening to the masters of our industry to gain a real grasp of how they went about evolving our business. With his enormous influence in the evolution of the networks and the cable programming world, there is no one better suited than Peter to deliver this story. I mean just look at the shows he’s influenced – Nip/Tuck, 24 and American Idol to name three! That’s it for me – I look forward to catching back up with many of you, my both old and some new friends this year. This time in fabulous LA, were we are set up for another ground breaking PromaxBDA conference.
